Rider: 79kg , Style: Foil Race,  Weather: 6-8 Knots,  Build Quality: 10/10  Satisfaction: 10/10  Disclosure: Ozone/Kitepower Team Rider, The video in the link below is from the same session as the review.   https://www.facebook.com/kitepower.sydney/videos/vb.133206584201/10153852835354202/?type=2&theater

As a chrono rider and foil racer, I was keen to see what the differences were between the chrono and the R1. Currently I ride a 12m Chrono and Ozone edges, so I can make a direct comparison with the 11m R1   On first impressions the kite was folded in the bag like a accordion as if it had been squished from either end. The bridals were noticeably thinner than the chrono too. The kite also has heaps more cells and looks different lying on the beach compared with the chrono. The bag also has a new zip design diagonally across the bag which looks pretty cool and opens the whole bag up.   Set up was pretty easy, hot launch on 27m lines in around 4-5 knots of wind. The kite inflated slightly faster than the chrono and had no wingtip folding during launch. Looking through the material into the innards of the kite, it looks like the holes between the cells are slightly bigger allowing for faster air transfer to the tips.   In the sky it looks pretty impressive. In direct comparison to my 12m Chrono I would say it has a slightly thinner chord length and foil thickness, with roughly the same span. I think it is also a little bit flatter arc shape making more projected area. There are less bridles per cell, and the bridles look a little less complicated because of this.   Flying the kite around on the beach in a seriously light amount of wind I was impressed with the stability. It didn’t need much input and could fly above my head with the rear lines slack. After a few loops generating a surprising amount of power I thought I’d give the foil a try.   Realistically there was no more than 8 knots. I’d call 6-8. For anyone who knows Dolls there is also current and it was flowing at the time around 1 knot cross upwind aiding. I kite light wind a lot and it would have been close to the lightest wind I’ve ever kited in. Saying that kiting through the points where there is no current I had no issue. I didn’t feel underpowered however until the end when the wind died completely, in fact I had the depower pulled whilst riding. I was riding my super high aspect Lister foil which I would say is also the board that gets me riding in the lightest wind of anything I’ve ever used.   The biggest difference I thought was the amount of power. It is seriously grunty for an 11m. I would say that this power comes from the speed at which the kite flies as opposed to the static pull. It loops and flies faster than a chrono which leads to more apparent wind and more grunt. Through the tacks this was very noticeable, and I was getting lifted in so little wind, an eerie feeling. In the sky the entire time it was super stable with no wingtip folding or collapsing.   There is no question that it is a super fast kite and in my opinion the fastest kite out there, definitely of the ones I have tried. It really feels like a refined Chrono, targeted even more heavily towards speed, but not at the expense of usability. I cannot wait to take this kite out in 15-20 knots and see what it can do. Very impressed.

Dalsi R1 review:

Ozone R1- 11m review  Rider Weight: 85kgs Style: racing, foiling Board: spotz 2 Skill: can tack and gybe I buy my own stuff  Got my hands on a R1 through Max VMG in Perth (They were very helpful and delivered earlier than I expected). Have used it twice. The only other race foil kite I have tried is a Flysurfer sonic 11m (twice). Since I have bought the R1 to improve my performance when racing I feel I can only properly give it a review after I have raced other people, and I haven't had the chance yet (Jono Keys refused to line up next to me :) I'm not really interested in how a kite feels or looks or how well it relaunches and those other things people talk about. Just performance. One detail not related to performance is how small and light it packs up, tinny and light! Perfect for traveling with.  I can say that the R1 in comparison to my edges is a massive improvement in performance, I have lined up against some guys on inflatable kites. I'm pointing higher and going faster upwind relative to my previous performances. Downwind I'm pointing lower and going faster. In comparison to my inflatables it feels like the 11m R1 has a larger wind range. I've been in 5- 18knots already and haven't had a problem. Any experienced racers making the switch to foil kites: I don't think you will have too much trouble using either sonic or R1. Totally ridable. Maybe just when you are standing on the beach the foil kite sits so much further forward in the window and needs constant attention. Everything else seems to make sense. Turning a foil kite is a bit different and finding the power stroke is a bit different timing. The race foil kites don't pull as much when they are turning. I did feel that the R1, relative to the sonic, had less of the wing tip folding in problem that foil kites have.  I am stoked that I have a race foil kite! I think everyone needs to upgrade to race foil kites in order to improve performance in racing, speed, and boosting. For me price and availability were hugely important. I'm leaving in a couple of weeks to go to some comps (i'll report back again). The R1 seemed to have good feedback from international racers so I went with it. So far I'm very happy with it. I think i'll be competitive with the R1 no mater which foil kite I line up against. Wether the R1 is the absolute best race kite out of all race kites Sonic, Elf, Fone.. I think we have to wait a bit longer. But I will preach that upgrading to any race foil kite is a must. So much nicer. Flatter, more efficient profiles. Looks more like a sail should be rather than a inflatable circle in the air.   Thumbs up Torvar

Wow, the wind must have known we just received an R1. Jordan arrived at shop around 2pm, the bay was glass. Him being the eternal optimist, was determined that a localised NE would arrive in an hour.   3pm and sure enough we can see the NE coming on the water, get down to the beach (dolls point), came through at 10knots initially. Launched the R1 and inflated within 30sec, a lot quicker than I remember with the Chrono so the extra vents definitely help and the wing tips don't fold in as easily.   Got dragged around while waiting for Jordan, kite felt great. Fast, stable and very powerful through the window. Gave him the kite and once he got out deep enough, one loop and he was up foiling on his Lister. I thought the wind was around 6-8 by then but he could swear it was less, I'll trust him as he goes out in those conditions a lot more than I. Looking at Kurnell, it was definitely down to 6-7 while he was out, had to come in once it hit 4 knots around 4pm but the kite still stayed in the air easily.   I'll let him put up a proper review. All I can say is I'm even more impressed with this than when I first flew the Chrono.   Video on our facebook here :)
